Saturday 12th January 2013: Ascot:
Grey Cheval (Husson Lightning / Solange) returned from a lengthy spell to win her third straight race from as many starts when she easily won the Crown Perth Handicap over 1000m by 2 and a half lengths, taking her stakes winning to $78,000.
Earlier that week, Cherie Amour (Husson Lightning / Kimique) won the Amelia Park Maiden at Bunbury over 1000m.
Husson Lightning is still the leading WA second season sire.
Heytesbury has some fabulous Husson Lightning colts and fillies in the upcoming Magic Millions Perth Yearling sales and photos of these will soon be on the website.
With a February sale date now fast approaching, resident Heytesbury Stud First Season Sire Husson Lightning could not have timed his run better. Quick out of the barriers in his racing style, Husson Lightning has produced progeny race track results in the same vein.
Currently Husson Lightning is the Leading First Season Sire in Western Australia and sits third overall amongst new season sire’s Australia wide. Ironically his own sire Hussonet is the sire of three of the top eleven new season sires in Australia, including the current leading first season sire Husson.
Husson Lightning’s two year old’s were expected to jump and run and they are doing just that. Some of his first progeny include the smart Ascot winner Tempestuous Strike for trainer Trevor Andrews and the multiple Ascot placegetter Avuncular for trainer Lou Luciani, and perhaps the most exciting performer to date belongs to the all powerful David Haye’s stable in Mrs Gray, a very exciting filly that will now be set for the GR 1 Golden Slipper after her fast finishing luckless fifth placing in the recently run Two Million Dollar Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Series Final for two year olds. This followed on after placing’s at Sandown, Flemington and Rosehill.
Husson Lightning’s second crop yearlings are expected to be well sought after by astute buyers. He will be represented by eighteen quality lots overall at the 2012 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sales.

Cracking Season Start for Saxon & Husson Lightning's Progeny
It's been a great start to the season for both Saxon and Husson Lightning's progeny, achieving some wins and several places in the first week of August.
Tempestuous Strike (Husson Lighting - La Lollobrigida by Dauberval USA) is now two wins from two starts, with $45,000 in stakes, after coming first at Belmont on Wednesday 1 August.
Jim 'N' Jim (Saxon - Run Ronnie Run) won at Belmont on Saturday 4 August. He has now won over $49,000 in stakes. Stacks On (Saxon - Zany Lady) took her winnings to $110,000 after placing second on Saturday also.
"Astute trainer Simon Miller produced another well supported debut winner at Belmont Park on Wednesday, with Husson Lightning filly Grey Cheval proving too classy for her rivals in the Westspeed 3YO Handicap (1000m).
Miller has built up a strong reputation since arriving in Western Australia as Aquanita Perth’s head trainer and he has specialised with his younger horses in his first few years of training.
Last season alone Miller prepared nine two-year-old winners including Darlington Abbey, who won the Magic Millions two-year-old Classic, Miss Solis, winner of the Supremacy Stakes and in recent times Hard Ball Get, who is two wins from as many starts.
On Wednesday, Grey Cheval began quickly for Pat Carbery and assumed the role as pace-maker, before kicking clear of rivals in the home straight and scoring a comfortable race victory.
The daughter of Husson Lightning was purchased for only $9,000 at the Perth Magic Millions sale and she has quickly repaid her owners with stakes topping the $20,000 region including Westspeed Bonuses.
Race favourite Karratha Crossing had a trouble free run throughout behind the speed, but she couldn’t quite reel in the eventual winner and settled for second place.
Miki Two Toes ran up to his solid trial form when running on strongly for fourth place, while $180,000 yearling Rio Rancher battled away in third position."

HEYTESBURY STUD to cease operations in 2014
21 January 2014
After more than forty years of breeding and racing thoroughbreds in Western Australia, Heytesbury Stud has announced it will cease operations in 2014.
Heytesbury Stud will offer yearlings at the upcoming Perth Magic Millions sales, and its remaining horses at a combination of auction and private sale over the coming months.
The only exception will be their exciting new stallion Ouqba, a Group winning son of Red Ransom, who will continue to stand in WA at another stud (details to be announced soon).
Highlights for Heytesbury Stud over the decades include standing stallions such as Haulpak (perhaps WA’s greatest ever sire), Pago Pago (Golden Slipper winner and Champion Sire), Silver Knight (winner of 1971 Melbourne Cup), Family of Man (Australian Horse of the Year), Is It True (Breeders’ Cup Winner), Carry A Smile (WA Horse of the Year), Success Express (Breeders’ Cup Winner), Saxon (Champion First Season and 2YO Sire in WA), Husson Lightning (currently leading 2YO Sire in WA).
On the racetrack, highlights have been innumerable, including Group One wins in races such as the Karrakatta Plate, the WA Derby, the Doncaster Handicap, the Epsom Handicap, the Ampol Stakes (now Emirates Stakes), and the Goodwood Stakes, placings in the Golden Slipper and Railway Stakes, and hundreds of other wins at race tracks around the country.
The greatest highlight of all, of course, was Black Knight’s victory in the 1984 Melbourne Cup. Bred at Heytesbury Stud, by foundation sire Silver Knight, and from foundation mare Brenta, Black Knight carried Heytesbury Stud’s famous maroon and white racing colours to victory in Australia’s greatest race.
“It’s obviously a difficult decision on a personal level, having watched my father, mother and grandmother develop Heytesbury Stud from scratch,” Heytesbury Stud principal, Paul Holmes à Court, said.
“I’m retaining our racing colours, an interest in Ouqba, and certainly won’t be selling the farm, but 2013 was our last breeding season, and this year’s sales will be our last.”
“In some ways, Heytesbury Stud’s closure is the end of an era for the WA industry. My father did things that had never been done before, and might never happen again.”
“My family will always have fond memories of its time in the industry, and of all the wonderful people in it. It’s a really great industry, and we’ll miss it.”
“I’m very grateful for all the support we’ve enjoyed from our wonderful clients over the years, and of course all the talented and loyal staff we’ve had too.”
For details of horses for sale, or for more information, please call Paul Holmes a Court on 6217 2600.
